Varicose Veins Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

3 minutes read

Varicose veins are large and swollen blood vessels that twist and turn. They are usually developed in the legs and are visible through the skin. Varicose veins affect both men and women. The stats show that around 50-55% of women and 45% of men suffer from this medical condition. The article discusses the causes and treatment of the problem. The condition is very painful and at time it also causes itching.

Causes

There are many factors that cause varicose veins. Gravity in combination with pressure of body weight can cause this condition. The legs are a common site for the veins to develop as they handle the weight of the body. Veins allow the blood to travel freely from one location to another. When these valves become weak, blood flow in reverse, back in the valves, causing it to swell.

Symptoms

  • In the early stage, there are no visible signs of the problem. The earlier symptoms also include leg pain. It can noticeably worse at night.
  • Leg ache and first appearance of telangiectasia
  • Ankle swelling
  • Edema, redness, itchiness and dryness of the skin
  • Cramps in the leg, while, making a sudden move.
  • Bleeding in the area.
  • In some people, the skin above the ankle may also shrink.
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Whitened irregular scar-like pattern can appear on the ankles.

Varicose veins treatment

Endovenous Laser Ablation is a modern technique used to treat the skin condition. It treats varicose veins involving the great or small saphenous venous systems in the legs. The laser damages the walls and closes the refluxing veins. It takes around one hour for the procedure to get complete. The patient can resume to the normal routine the same day.

The treatment has the best success rate as compared to any other methods available for treating the condition. Not all veins are suitable for these procedures so for this reason; Duplex ultrasound scan is performed after the initial consultation, to assess the condition. The scan determines the direction of venous blood flow and also the extent of the problem. After the process, the doctor suggests you to wear compression stockings. He may also advise you to take over the counter medications like anti-inflammatory medicines ibuprofen and aspirin to lessen the pain.
