Dark pigmentation or “hyperpigmentation” is a common skin condition that affects people of all skin types. It occurs when the skin produces abnormal amounts of melanin, the pigment that gives the skin its colour. When melanin becomes highly concentrated in one area of the skin, pigmented lesions occur. These appear darker than the surrounding skin and occur as a result of overexposure to the sun, hormonal changes and aging. Some forms of hyperpigmentation such as melasma and sun spots are more likely to affect areas of the skin that face sun exposure, including the face, arms and legs.
